Cycling in Grafton

Best season: April–October

Grafton sits where the Illinois River pours into the Mississippi, and the ride here is the Sam Vadalabene Bike Trail: 20.5 fully paved miles squeezed between limestone bluffs and open river, running from Pere Marquette State Park through Grafton and the tiny stone village of Elsah down to Piasa Park in Alton. It parallels the Meeting of the Great Rivers scenic byway, so you get riverboat-captain views the whole way at bicycle speed.

The neat trick here is that the trailhead hotel rents the bikes. Pere Marquette Lodge, the 1930s stone-and-timber lodge at the trail’s western end, rents one-speed cruisers by the hour or day from the front desk — roll out of the great hall and straight onto the trail. In town, a Water Street outfitter rents bikes alongside kayaks, and a regional e-bike shop brings group rentals to Grafton by appointment and pops up in Alton on Saturdays.

The riding is flat, river-grade, and unhurried — well suited to casual riders and families, with wineries and fish-sandwich stands in Grafton as the halfway reward. Summer is hot and exposed under the bluffs, so carry water; spring and fall are the sweet spots, and eagle-watching season brings riders out on mild winter days.
