Cycling in Grand Junction

Best season: March–November

Grand Junction sits at the center of the Grand Valley, where high-desert singletrack, road climbs and vineyard cruising all start within a short drive of downtown. The Lunch Loops (Tabeguache) trail system on the south edge of town is the marquee mountain-biking destination, while the switchbacks of Rim Rock Drive through Colorado National Monument draw road riders and the Riverfront Trail offers flat car-free spinning. To the east, Palisade’s Fruit and Wine Byway links roughly ten wineries along a mostly flat loop that is ideal on a cruiser or e-bike.

For a bike-forward stay, Hotel Maverick on the Colorado Mesa University campus includes bike rental with a guest’s stay for cruising downtown, and in nearby Palisade the cycling-themed Spoke and Vine Motel rents cruiser bikes and provides locked on-site bike storage a few blocks from Main Street and the wineries.

Downtown Grand Junction is well stocked with bike shops: Brown Cycles and Bicycle Outfitters (both on/near Main Street) rent road, hybrid and mountain bikes, while Ruby Canyon Cycles rents high-end full-suspension mountain bikes for the Lunch Loops. In Palisade, Rapid Creek Cycles (now Palisade Cycle & Shuttle) rents cruisers and e-bikes and runs shuttles for wine-country and trail rides. Spring and fall are the prime seasons; midsummer in the valley gets hot, so ride early.

Each May downtown Grand Junction hosts Grand Junction Rides & Vibes, a mountain-bike race paired with a free two-day music festival on Main Street — the successor to the old Grand Junction Off-Road.
