Cycling in Greenville

Best season: March–June, September–November

Greenville’s cycling scene runs on the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail, a paved rail-trail of roughly 22 miles built on an old railway corridor. It rolls straight through downtown past Falls Park’s waterfall, skirts Furman University’s lake, and lands on Main Street in Travelers Rest, a small town that has rebuilt itself around trail traffic — pizza, ice cream and coffee all sit within a bike-length of the pavement.

The railroad grade keeps things gentle, which makes the Greenville-to-Travelers Rest run a favorite family ride: about ten miles up, lunch in TR, and an easy spin back. Rental support is unusually good — a dedicated cruiser shop sits in downtown Greenville, a longtime outfitter rents bikes right at the trail in Travelers Rest, and the Swamp Rabbit Inn keeps its own fleet two blocks off the trail with helmets and locks included.

Hotels lean into it. The Grand Bohemian Lodge beside Falls Park keeps first-come house bikes and partners with the local rental shop, while ten miles north, Hotel Domestique — co-founded by pro cyclist George Hincapie — stocks performance road and gravel bikes with GPS units preloaded with the owner’s training routes into the Blue Ridge foothills.

Spring and fall are ideal; summer rides are best kept to shady trail miles in the morning. If you’d rather be guided, e-bike tours run the trail daily from downtown, from a two-hour waterfall loop to a half-day round trip to Travelers Rest.
