Alabama’s beach twins hide one of the best trail systems on the Gulf Coast. The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail threads roughly 28 paved miles through 6,150-acre Gulf State Park, crossing nine ecosystems between Gulf Shores and Orange Beach — dune ridges, freshwater lakes, oak hammocks, and boardwalk stretches where gopher tortoises and the occasional alligator steal the show. USA Today has named it the country’s best recreational trail three years running.
Getting on a bike here is unusually easy. The park runs a free Bloom-app bike share — 50 bikes at stations by the beach pavilion and major trailheads, free for the first three hours — and The Lodge at Gulf State Park hands its guests the same complimentary access right outside the lobby, while Eagle Cottages on Lake Shelby includes bicycles with every stay. Prefer more range? Rental shops bracket both park entrances with e-bikes, cruisers, tandems, and kids’ bikes, most with helmets and locks thrown in.
Everything is flat and paved, which makes this a family destination first and a casual-cruiser paradise second; e-bikes turn the full trail network into an easy half-day. A guided two-hour e-bike tour runs daily inside the park if you want the ecology narrated.
Ride early from June through September — Gulf humidity is real and afternoon thunderstorms are routine. Spring and late fall bring the ideal mix of mild temperatures, migrating birds, and thinner beach crowds.
