Harrisonburg has long been one of the East Coast’s serious cycling towns. The George Washington National Forest wraps the city on three sides with technical singletrack, endless gravel, and quiet mountain roads, and the area hosts the grueling Shenandoah Mountain 100 endurance race each Labor Day weekend. Downtown greenways like the Friendly City Trail and the Rocktown Trails connect the city to the forest, so many rides start from town.
For a base, Hotel Madison sits on South Main Street within a few minutes of three bike shops and markets itself to the outdoor crowd, though it does not run a dedicated loaner or storage program that could be confirmed. Renting is easy: Shenandoah Bicycle Company on South Main is the area’s rental hub, with full-suspension Trek and Ibis mountain bikes, road, gravel, hybrid, and e-bikes, all including a helmet and flat kit. Rocktown Bicycles (a Specialized shop) and Mole Hill Bikes just south in Dayton round out the options.
Guided riders and shuttle users are well served. Shenandoah Mountain Touring runs by-appointment guided road and mountain tours plus backcountry shuttles, Bluestone Bike & Run offers National Forest-permitted guided rides and shuttles, and Massanutten Resort about ten miles east operates a lift-served bike park with its own Western Slope shuttle. Late spring through mid-fall is the prime window; the Massanutten shuttle typically runs mid-June through early November.
Harrisonburg’s marquee ride is October’s Alpine Loop Gran Fondo, a Main Street mass start with route options up to 110 miles and over 11,000 feet of climbing into the surrounding mountains.
