Cycling in Hilton Head Island

Best season: March–May, September–November

Hilton Head Island may be the easiest cycling vacation in America: a Gold-Level Bicycle Friendly Community laced with more than 60 miles of leisure pathways that connect the beaches, marinas and resort villages — all of it flat, much of it shaded by live oaks and palmettos. The island’s signature move is riding the beach itself: at low tide the sand packs hard enough to cruise for miles along the Atlantic.

Bikes are baked into the hotel scene here more than almost anywhere else. The Inn & Club at Harbour Town includes adult bicycles with your stay, the Omni and Sonesta run guest rental programs on property, and the Westin puts a rental kiosk steps from the lobby in season. If your hotel doesn’t hand you a bike, one of the island’s roughly thirty rental outfits will deliver one to your door — cruisers, kids’ bikes and trailers included.

Inside the gates, Sea Pines adds its own 15-mile path network out to Harbour Town’s lighthouse, and Palmetto Dunes threads bike trails along an 11-mile lagoon system. One local rule worth knowing: Sea Pines, Shipyard and Hilton Head Plantation don’t allow e-bikes, so stick to a pedal cruiser if you’re staying behind those gates.

Spring and fall bring the best riding weather; summers are hot and humid, so locals ride early and aim for a low-tide beach cruise. Guided e-bike history tours run about two hours if you want the Gullah culture and Lowcountry backstory with your miles.
