Cycling in Hood River

Best season: April–October

Hood River hangs above the Columbia River an hour east of Portland, and its signature ride is the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail — the Twin Tunnels segment, a paved, car-free 4.5 miles from Hood River to Mosier that passes through the restored 1921 Mosier Twin Tunnels. It’s one of the more dramatic short rides in the Northwest: you start in fir forest, roll through rock-cut tunnels above the river, and pop out in dry ponderosa country on the Mosier side.

E-bikes are the local currency here, and for good reason — the trailhead sits atop a steep climb out of downtown. The historic hotel on Oak Street sells a bike-and-brunch package with an e-bike shop a block away, a Victorian B&B rents e-bikes to its guests, and independent shops around town rent everything from city e-bikes to high-end mountain bike demos for the Post Canyon trails above town.

Beyond the tunnels, riders loop the orchard-and-winery roads of the Hood River Fruit Loop or book an all-inclusive guided wine-country tour that shuttles you back to your hotel. April through October is prime; the Gorge’s famous wind is usually at your back one way and in your teeth the other, so plan your turnaround accordingly.
