Cycling in Indianapolis
Best season: April–October
Indianapolis is one of the easiest big cities in the Midwest to explore by bike, because the marquee route runs right through the middle of it. The Indianapolis Cultural Trail is a 10-mile, traffic-protected loop that stitches together the six downtown cultural districts — Mass Ave, Fountain Square, White River State Park, Indiana Avenue, the Wholesale District and Market East — past public art, gardens and the downtown canal. It’s flat, paved and beginner-friendly, and it links up to the Monon Trail, a 27-mile asphalt rail-trail that carries you north through Broad Ripple and out toward the Hamilton County countryside on a single car-free path.
You don’t need to bring a bike. Indiana Pacers Bikeshare has 50-plus docking stations threaded along the Cultural Trail (classic and e-bikes, unlocked with the BCycle app, running 24/7), while Wheel Fun Rentals in White River State Park rents everything from cruisers and tandems to kids’ bikes for the day.
For lodging, the Bottleworks Hotel on Mass Ave is the natural base: it sits in the restored Coca-Cola bottling plant, and Pedego Indy’s e-bike shop is inside the same district building, with a standing 10%-off rental-and-tour discount for hotel guests. Pedego also runs a guided “Bikes and Brews” e-bike tour along the Cultural Trail if you’d rather be shown around.
Come April through October for the best riding — the trails are exposed and summer afternoons get hot and humid, so an early start and a full water bottle go a long way. Weekend bike-share demand near Mass Ave and the canal spikes, so grab a dock early.
