Cycling in Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island might be the easiest cycling vacation in the Southeast. The whole island is a state-managed park laced with more than 24 miles of paved paths that loop past Driftwood Beach’s bone-white fallen oaks, the Gilded Age “Millionaires’ Village” of the Historic District, and the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. It’s all pancake-flat barrier-island riding under live-oak shade — the rental fleets here run to beach cruisers, surreys, tandems, and kid trailers, not carbon race bikes.
What makes Jekyll unusual is how deeply the hotels lean into it. The landmark Jekyll Island Club Resort runs its own rental center, Jekyll Wheels, with discounted rates for resort guests; the oceanfront Holiday Inn Resort and Villas by the Sea rent bikes on property; and the Beachview Club sells bike-rental packages with breakfast credit. You can realistically check in, walk downstairs, and be pedaling the beach loop in ten minutes without ever moving your car.
Independent rentals back up the hotel desks: Bike Jekyll’s barn at Beachview Drive and Shell Road stays open into the evening with surreys and dog trailers, and a local operator runs a cheap one-hour guided wildlife ride from the same corner (call ahead — it needs a six-person minimum).
Practical notes: the island charges a daily entry fee at the causeway gate, and summer riding means real heat and humidity — go early, carry water, and save the exposed beachfront stretch for golden hour. Spring and fall are the sweet spots.
