Cycling in Kapaa

Best season: Year-round; driest April–October

Kapaa is the rare Hawaiian beach town where the best thing to do doesn’t require a car: Ke Ala Hele Makalae, “the path that goes by the coast,” is a paved shoreline trail running roughly eight miles along Kauai’s Royal Coconut Coast, from Lydgate Beach Park past downtown Kapaa toward Kealia Beach and Donkey Beach. It’s flat, ocean-hugging, and genuinely family-friendly — whale watching from the saddle in winter is a real possibility.

The rental scene sits directly on the path. Hele On Kauai and Holoholo Bike Rentals are both essentially trailside in Kapaa town, renting beach cruisers from around $23 a day and e-bikes for those who want to knock out the whole path twice, with kids’ bikes and trailers for families. Boss Frog’s keeps a stock of walk-in cruisers a short roll from the trail as well.

Hotels lean into it. Kauai Shores Hotel, an oceanfront property on Papaloa Road, lists complimentary bikes for guests, and the Hilton Garden Inn Kauai Wailua Bay reportedly bundles a two-hour path-side bike rental into its resort charge — worth confirming the details when you book, but either way you can be pedaling within minutes of check-in.

Practical tip: the east side is Kauai’s windward, showerier coast, so ride in the morning when the trade winds are calmest — and book the famous Waimea Canyon downhill tour (west side, from about $114) a few weeks ahead, since it sells out in peak season.
