Cycling in Lake Placid

Best season: June–October

Lake Placid spent the 20th century famous for ice, but its summer headline is now the Adirondack Rail Trail — 34 miles of vehicle-free path that opened in full in fall 2025, running from the village through Ray Brook and Saranac Lake out to Tupper Lake. The surface is firmly packed stone dust (paved where it threads through downtown Saranac Lake), so it rides fast on a hybrid, gravel bike, or e-bike, and the flat rail grade makes it genuinely family-friendly for a trail this long.

The town is built for riders who arrive without a bike. Bike Lake Placid sits near the trail’s Lake Placid trailhead with a full e-bike fleet — cruisers, e-MTBs, even a cargo RadWagon — and delivers to hotels. Placid Planet and the veteran High Peaks Cyclery round out the scene with hybrids, gravel rigs, full-suspension mountain bikes, and kids’ sizes; High Peaks also runs a rail-trail shuttle so you can ride one direction and get a lift back.

Lodging has leaned in. The Eastwind Hotel lends complimentary bikes to guests as weather permits, the lakefront Golden Arrow bundles a “Bike Lake Placid” e-bike package onto any room, and the Main Street Grand Adirondack offers seasonal guest rentals — so you can roll from your room to the trailhead without a car. Beyond the rail trail, the surrounding High Peaks serve up serious road climbs and singletrack for riders who want more than a cruise.

Come June through October: the rail trail and mountain riding are a spring-to-fall affair, and by winter Lake Placid swaps tires for skis and skates. Book bikes ahead for summer and fall-foliage weekends, when the fleets and the town both fill up.
