Cycling in Lambertville

Best season: April–October

Lambertville sits on the Delaware River across a walkable bridge from New Hope, Pennsylvania, and its marquee ride runs right through town: the Delaware & Raritan Canal towpath, a flat, crushed-stone, car-free path that follows the river for miles in both directions. Head north through Stockton to Bulls Island and Frenchtown (about 15 miles one way), or south toward Washington Crossing — antique towns, canal locks, and river views the whole way.

The bridges are the trick locals use: cross the Delaware at Lambertville, Stockton, Bulls Island, or Frenchtown and come back on Pennsylvania’s Delaware Canal towpath for loop rides of anywhere from 9 to 30 miles without repeating a mile.

Lambertville Station Inn sits at the foot of the bridge with the towpath essentially out the door and offers a Bike & Hike package that includes hybrid bikes with your room; three miles upstream, the historic Stockton Inn keeps complimentary bicycles for guests. In town, Pure Energy Cycling rents hybrids and e-bikes a block from the canal (reserve a day ahead), and Big Bear Gear rents bikes and e-bikes right beside the towpath south of downtown. A guided e-bike tour out of New Hope covers both towpaths and the river towns.

The crushed-stone surface suits any hybrid or cruiser, but it drains slowly — skip the day after a big rain, and expect the prettiest riding in spring and in October foliage season.
