Cycling in Lanesboro

Best season: April–October (fall bluff color is the signature draw)

Lanesboro is what happens when a whole town organizes itself around a rail-trail. The Root River State Trail runs 42 paved miles from Fountain through Lanesboro, Whalan, Peterson, and Rushford to Houston, tracing the river beneath limestone bluffs, and Lanesboro sits at its heart — trailhead, outfitters, B&Bs, and an arts-and-Amish-country main street all within a couple of blocks. The Harmony–Preston Valley State Trail branches off nearby for a quieter valley spur.

Rentals are effortless. The Little River General Store has outfitted trail riders for 37 years and publishes its full rate card — hybrids from $18 an hour or $33 a day, plus e-bikes, tandems, recumbents, and kid trailers (bring the signed rental agreement). The Root River Inn & Suites downtown rents its own small fleet — including a vintage-styled Schwinn tandem — by QR code or as an add-on to your room, and Cedar Valley Resort in tiny Whalan, 4.5 trail miles away, rents to guests at discounted rates and runs bike shuttles between the trail towns. Uniquely, the neighboring towns of Harmony, Preston, Fountain, Peterson, and Rushford all lend bikes free through a county bike-share (18+, ID, and a signed waiver).

The riding is gentle rail grade the whole way — this is a cruiser-and- family destination, with the short Lanesboro-to-Whalan out-and-back as the classic easy outing and full-trail days for stronger riders.

Season runs roughly April to October; the main rental shop closes November 15 to April 1. Come in late September or early October if you can — the bluff color over the river is the best backdrop the trail offers.
