Cycling in Laramie

Best season: June–October

Laramie is a high-plains college town with an unusual amount of dirt within easy reach. The classic long ride is the Medicine Bow Rail Trail, a 21-mile gravel rail-trail on an old gold-rush railroad grade through the Medicine Bow National Forest about a half hour from town — mellow grades, lodgepole forest, and six trailheads to break it into any length you like.

Singletrack riders come for Curt Gowdy State Park and the neighboring Happy Jack trails in the granite country between Laramie and Cheyenne, where there’s a trail for every skill level — and since the Pilot Hill Recreation Area opened, the trail system connects straight to the east edge of town.

Rentals are easy: Fast Haus Ski & Bike fits you on a mountain bike (helmet and a shuttle to the local trails included) and runs e-bikes out of its downtown sister store, Basecamp. One hotel in town is reported to lend guests bikes for free — call ahead to confirm before you count on it.

At 7,200 feet the season runs roughly June through October; carry layers, expect afternoon wind, and remember high-country trails can hold snow well into spring.
