Cycling in Lewes

Best season: April–June, September–October

Lewes calls itself “the first town in the first state,” and its best asset for cyclists starts right at the edge of downtown: the Junction & Breakwater Trail, a flat 5.8-mile rail-trail of paved and crushed-stone path that runs to Rehoboth Beach through pine forest, open fields, and coastal marsh. A restored 1913 railroad bridge over Holland Glade frames a view of the old WWII observation tower in Cape Henlopen State Park, and the western end at Gills Neck Road ties into the Georgetown–Lewes Trail. It is a National Recreation Trail for good reason — easy enough for kids and strollers, scenic enough that you will keep stopping for photos.

String it together with the crushed-gravel Gordons Pond Trail inside Cape Henlopen State Park — a half-mile of elevated boardwalk floats you over the dunes and salt marsh — and you have a roughly 15-mile Lewes-to-Rehoboth loop that barely touches a road. The riding is flat, sandy-edged, and squarely beginner-friendly; the hardest decision is which brewery or beach to aim for.

Lewes is unusually bike-forward for a small coastal town. The canal-front Dogfish Inn keeps a Gear Shed of custom Priority Bicycles beach cruisers that guests can borrow, with e-bikes available to rent, while the Beacon Inn offers secure indoor bike storage a block from the state-park trail. If you arrive without wheels, Lewes Cycle Sports on Savannah Road delivers within town and Seagreen Bicycle sits right on the Junction & Breakwater Trail with hybrids from about $42 a day.

Come in late spring or early fall. Summer weekends bring beach traffic and biting midday sun on the exposed marsh sections, but a May morning or a crisp October afternoon gives you the trail, the dunes, and the herons nearly to yourself.
