Cycling in Lewisburg

Best season: April–October

Lewisburg anchors the southern end of the Greenbrier River Trail, a 78-mile crushed-limestone rail-trail that follows the Greenbrier River from North Caldwell up to Cass, crossing 35 bridges and rolling through two tunnels along the way. The grade never tops what a train could climb, so hybrids, gravel bikes, and e-bikes all work — ride an easy out-and-back from the Caldwell end or string trail towns together over several days.

Logistics are the valley’s strength. Free Spirit Adventures in Caldwell rents bikes and runs shuttles the length of the trail, Greenbrier Bikes in mid-trail Marlinton rents bikes and e-bikes with shuttles from milepost 56, and Greenbrier Outfitters in White Sulphur Springs pairs rentals with a scheduled trail shuttle.

If your trip leans resort, The Greenbrier — ten minutes from Lewisburg — rents comfort bikes, mountain bikes, and e-bikes right on property and sells a shuttle-plus-rental package for the river trail. Wilderness Voyageurs also runs a three-day inn-to-inn tour of the full trail out of Lewisburg.

The middle miles of the trail are genuinely remote: carry water, snacks, and a spare tube. Spring runs high and green; October’s fall color is the signature ride.
