Cycling in Lexington
Best season: April–October
Lexington is the capital of Kentucky Horse Country, and the best way to see it is from the saddle. The Legacy Trail — a 12-mile paved path voted the state’s favorite, with eight miles fully separated from traffic — runs north from downtown to the Kentucky Horse Park, unspooling past white plank fences, old barns, grazing thoroughbreds, a heron-dotted lake, and public art the whole way. An extra 8-mile loop through the Horse Park itself makes for an easy half-day in the bluegrass.
The trail suits everyone from families to road riders warming up for the region’s famous horse-farm-and-bourbon back roads. You don’t need to bring a bike: Lex E-Bikes sits a single block off the trail on Jefferson Street and sends you out with a helmet, lock, and 50-mile e-bike, while the North Lexington YMCA at the trail’s south trailhead rents bikes right where the path begins.
For a resort base, the Marriott Griffin Gate near the Horse Park end bundles bike rental into its nightly resort fee and hands bikes out through its golf shop — pedal straight onto the northern trailhead. If you’d rather go deep, multi-day outfitters like Wilderness Voyageurs and Cycle of Life Adventures run guided Bluegrass-and-bourbon tours that string together Keeneland, Woodford Reserve, and the Horse Park.
Come April through October. Spring brings the foaling season and the greenest pastures; fall is crisp and quiet. Summer riding is best in the morning before the humidity builds — carry water, since the trail’s separated stretches are low on shade.
