Cycling in Logan

Best season: May–October (mountain valley; snowy winters, with LOTOJA in early September)

Logan sits in Cache Valley, a wide agricultural basin walled by the Bear River and Wellsville ranges, and it is best known in cycling circles as the start of LOTOJA (Logan-to-Jackson). Rolling out of downtown Logan each September, LOTOJA covers 200-plus miles to Jackson, Wyoming and is the longest one-day USAC-sanctioned road race in the country, drawing hundreds of riders and their support crews to the valley on race weekend. Beyond the race, the League of American Bicyclists has awarded Logan a Silver Bicycle Friendly Community rating. The everyday riding is a big draw: quiet valley flats past dairy farms, the long grinding climb up Logan Canyon (US-89) toward Bear Lake, and Blacksmith Fork Canyon, plus mountain and gravel options in the surrounding Bear River Range.

Lodging aimed squarely at cyclists is limited. The University Inn on the Utah State University campus is LOTOJA’s listed Logan lodging partner and sits about a mile from the downtown start line, with covered, monitored parking useful for stashing bikes overnight, though it runs no formal bike program. For rentals and shop support, downtown’s Sunrise Cyclery (open since 1981) rents road and mountain bikes in a range of sizes; Al’s Sporting Goods runs a large full-service Cycle Center on North Main; and Joy Ride Bikes in North Logan is a full-service shop with a strong e-bike selection. Call ahead in all cases to confirm current rental inventory, sizing, and pricing, especially around LOTOJA weekend when demand spikes. No dedicated guided bike tours or shuttles operate out of Logan year-round.

Logan is the start line of the LoToJa Classic each September, a 200-plus-mile one-day road race over three mountain passes to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, billed as the longest USA Cycling one-day event.
