Cycling in Louisville

Best season: April–October

Louisville rides along the Ohio River. The signature spin is the Big Four Bridge — a converted railroad span turned pedestrian-and-bike deck that lifts you a mile across the river to Indiana with the downtown skyline over your shoulder — reached through Waterfront Park’s riverfront lanes. Those lanes are part of the Louisville Loop, a planned 100-plus-mile paved path slowly encircling the whole metro.

For real trail mileage, head southeast to The Parklands of Floyds Fork, where 60-plus miles of hike-bike trails weave paved roads and dirt singletrack together, complete with a bike park and repair stations. Between the Loop, the bridge, and the Parklands, this is a casual and family-friendly cycling city more than a technical one.

The standout place to stay is Park Side Bed & Bike in NuLu (the East Market District), where the guest apartments come with free use of two bicycles — roll out the door to the neighborhood’s restaurants and on toward the waterfront. If you’d rather rent, Pedego on Bardstown Road sets you up with an e-bike and a route to the Big Four Bridge, and Cloud of Goods will deliver a hybrid or cruiser straight to your hotel.

Ride April through October. Spring and fall are ideal; midsummer along the open riverfront gets hot and humid, so start early and carry water. One practical note: bike rentals shift year to year here — the old Waterfront Park rental stand has moved and the Parklands no longer rents on-site — so book a current operator ahead rather than assuming you can grab a bike at the trail.
