Cycling in Mackinac Island
Best season: May–October
Mackinac Island is the rare place where a bike isn’t optional — it’s the point. Motor vehicles have been banned island-wide for over a century, so travel is on foot, by horse, or on two wheels, and the signature ride is the M-185 shoreline loop: an 8.2-mile paved circuit that hugs the Lake Huron coast past Arch Rock, British Landing, and Mission Point. It’s almost dead flat, and a relaxed loop with photo stops takes about an hour and a half — genuinely kid-and-grandparent friendly.
Because there are no cars to compete with, rentals are everywhere and you can be riding within minutes of stepping off the ferry. Liveries cluster along Main Street: Mackinac Island Bike Shop sits right by the Shepler’s dock with a big Trek fleet, and Mackinac Cycle at Arnold Dock rents from about $13 an hour with a free helmet, basket, and water. Cruisers, tandems, trikes, kids’ bikes, and tag-alongs are all standard, and most shops run 8 AM into the early evening in summer.
Hotels lean into the car-free theme, too. The Island House Hotel runs its own rental counter directly out front, Bicycle Street Inn & Suites gives guests a discount at the adjacent bike shop, and Mission Point Resort rents from its lakefront campus near the start of the loop. If you’d rather be led, CAP Excursions runs a roughly 2.5-hour guided history ride of the perimeter.
Rental season runs about May through October. July and August bring the longest hours and the biggest crowds — rent early in the day, since bikes are how the whole island gets around and the good ones go fast on summer weekends.
