Cycling in Mammoth Lakes

Best season: Late May–September (park open through October)

Mammoth Lakes is the Eastern Sierra’s gravity-riding headquarters. Mammoth Mountain Bike Park is the highest lift-served bike park in California, packing 80-plus miles of singletrack full of berms, jumps and drops into a network that runs from the beginner Discovery Zone all the way to expert and pro lines. The marquee descent stitches Off the Top into Beach Cruiser and Downtown for nearly 15 miles and 3,000 vertical feet in a single lap, and the whole thing is served by the Panorama Gondola and chairlifts running 9am to 6pm daily in season.

You don’t need to own a downhill rig. The resort’s own rental shops — at the Mountain Center in The Village, at Main Lodge, and at Tamarack in the Lakes Basin — carry full-suspension trail bikes, enduro demos from Trek, Scott, Rocky Mountain and Intense, and full 8-inch-travel downhill bikes for the Pro-Line trails, with full-face helmets and armor available to rent. Pass and Ikon holders save 20% on rentals. In town, Footloose Sports and Get Outdoors 365 rent trail and e-bikes with published rates for the mellower Lakes Basin paths.

The obvious basecamps are the slopeside Mammoth Mountain Inn at Main Lodge and The Village Lodge, both with bike storage and a walk to rentals; the Westin Monache folds bike storage into its resort fee. The season typically opens late May and rides into October, but the village sits near 8,000 feet — hydrate, acclimate a day, and get your laps in before the afternoon storms build.
