Cycling in Marquette
Best season: May–October
Marquette is the Upper Peninsula’s cycling capital, and it works on two very different levels. For easy, scenic miles there’s the Iron Ore Heritage Trail — a roughly 47-mile, year-round multi-use path that threads the Marquette Iron Range, linking old mining sites, wetlands, forest, and a lakeshore stretch with big Lake Superior views. Through town it’s paved and family-friendly, perfect for a cruiser or an e-bike.
For riders who came to work, Marquette is also a serious mountain-biking destination. The Marquette South and North Trail networks pack in miles of flowing, rooty singletrack that draw riders from across the Midwest, and the season stretches into winter on fat bikes. It’s the kind of place where you can spin the lakeshore path in the morning and ride real dirt in the afternoon.
Gear is easy to sort. Lakeshore Bike sits right downtown across from the lakeshore path, renting everything from cruisers to full-suspension and electric mountain bikes with online booking. For lodging, the Superior Stay Hotel partners with MQT Bike Rentals, which delivers and picks up bikes free at the hotel, and the historic Landmark Inn overlooking Lake Superior offers guest bike rentals from its downtown perch near the trail.
Aim for May through October for the paved trail and singletrack; fat-bike rentals run year-round if you want to try the local winter riding scene. Summer brings the longest daylight this far north — a real advantage for stacking a long trail day.
