Cycling in Martha's Vineyard
Best season: May–October
Martha’s Vineyard is one of the few American destinations where a bicycle is genuinely the best way to get around. The island has 44+ miles of mostly flat, paved bike paths, and the down-island triangle connecting Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown is the marquee ride — especially the Beach Road stretch between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, where the path runs directly along the ocean. Up-island toward West Tisbury, Chilmark, and Aquinnah the paths give way to hilly, curvy rural roads that reward stronger riders with farm stands and the Gay Head cliffs.
The down-island paths suit families and first-timers; ambitious riders can circle the island for a 60-plus-mile day. Bikes travel on all incoming ferries for a small fee, and the VTA buses carry bikes too, so you can ride one way and bus back.
Several inns build cycling into the stay: Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites in Edgartown offers free bikes to guests (a favorite for the flat spin to Oak Bluffs), and Lambert’s Cove Inn keeps complimentary bicycles on its eight-acre West Tisbury farm. Rental shops cluster at each ferry landing — Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown all have long-running shops, most of which deliver island-wide to hotels and rental houses.
Practical tip: hotel bike fleets are small and first-come — claim one early on summer mornings, or reserve a delivery rental the day before. Note that Anderson’s Bike Rentals in Oak Bluffs, a fixture for 52 years, has closed; older guides still list it.
