Cycling in Missoula
Best season: April–October
Missoula is one of American cycling’s spiritual homes: the Adventure Cycling Association is headquartered downtown, and every summer the TransAmerica and Great Divide routes funnel loaded touring bikes through town. The everyday riding matches the reputation — the Riverfront Trail follows the Clark Fork right through the city center, connecting to the Kim Williams Nature Trail as it heads east into the canyon, and the Milwaukee Trail rail corridor runs crosstown.
When you want dirt, the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area starts just a few minutes north of downtown, with singletrack and old logging-road climbs that make Missoula a legitimate mountain-bike stop, not just a road-touring one.
Rentals are easy: Big Sky Bikes puts Specialized Roll cruisers a couple of blocks from the riverfront with helmet, lock, and flat kit included, and The Bicycle Hangar rents hybrids, e-bikes, and kids’ bikes at published day and weekly rates. On the lodging side, the Comfort Inn University advertises cruiser bikes for guest check-out near the river and campus, and downtown’s Shady Spruce Hostel includes cruiser-bike access with its suite.
Spring through fall is prime; summer afternoons get hot and the valley can hold wildfire smoke in August, so ride mornings. If you’re touring through, budget an hour for the Adventure Cycling office — visiting cyclists are a tradition there.
