Cycling in Moab

Best season: March–May, September–October

No town on earth is more synonymous with mountain biking than Moab. The Slickrock Bike Trail up at Sand Flats is the ride that made fat tires famous — a surreal loop of grippy petrified dunes — and it’s only the opening act. Shuttle outfits run riders to the top of the Whole Enchilada for one of the longest descents in the country, while networks like Moab Brands, Navajo Rocks, and Klondike Bluffs give intermediates a full week of options between Arches and Canyonlands.

You don’t need to haul a bike here. Main Street is lined with veteran rental shops — Poison Spider has been fitting visitors since 1991, and Chile Pepper will deliver a rental straight to the Slickrock or Navajo Rocks trailhead so you can roll from the parking lot. Moab Cyclery pairs full-suspension and e-bike rentals with daily shuttles to Porcupine Rim and Mag 7.

The lodging scene has caught up with the riding: the adventure-lodge on the north end of town (formerly Field Station, now a Hilton Outset property) rents mountain bikes from its own gear shop and lets you wheel your ride straight into the room, and several other hotels compete on bike storage, wash stations, and maintenance benches. If pedaling to dinner is more your speed, the paved Moab Canyon Pathway strings the north-end hotels toward the Arches entrance.

Come in spring or fall. Summer highs regularly bake past 100°F on exposed rock, so June–August riding means dawn starts and more water than you think you need — and book bikes ahead for March and October weekends, when the whole town sells out.
