Cycling in Montecito

Montecito’s riding splits between easy and hard. Along the coast, Butterfly Beach and Coast Village Road make for gentle cruiser miles, and the flat waterfront connects west into Santa Barbara’s Cabrillo Bike Path. For fitter riders, the foothill roads climbing north from the village toward East Valley Road and the mountains are a classic Santa Barbara road-cycling challenge.
Bike-friendly lodging here is thin and upscale. The historic Montecito Inn on Coast Village Road lends guests complimentary beach cruisers, an easy roll to Butterfly Beach. The Rosewood Miramar Beach, an oceanfront luxury resort, is reported to offer complimentary cruisers and electric Bluejay bicycles for guest use. The village’s other marquee names (San Ysidro Ranch and similar) are geared to seclusion rather than cycling programs.
There is no dedicated bike-rental storefront in Montecito proper, so riders without a hotel loaner generally rent in adjacent Santa Barbara, a short ride west along the waterfront, where cruiser and e-bike shops cluster near Cabrillo Boulevard and Stearns Wharf.
Montecito keeps things low-key, but each December the Coast Village Road Holiday Tree Lighting gathers the village for carolers, hot chocolate, and Santa — a short, flat spin from the beachfront path.
