Monterey is one of the few places where the best sightseeing route in town is a bike path. The Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail runs paved and car-free for 18 miles from Castroville to Pacific Grove, hugging the shoreline past Fisherman’s Wharf, Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and Lovers Point — with sea otters and harbor seals as regular trailside company. It’s flat, so it suits absolute beginners and families as much as riders logging miles.
Hotels here genuinely compete on bikes: a luxury Cannery Row property, a downtown garden hotel, and the beachfront hotel on Del Monte Beach all lend complimentary bikes to guests, mostly through partnerships with the trailside outfitter Adventures by the Sea. If you want more than the free fleet, rental shops at Cannery Row and Lovers Point supply e-bikes, surreys, and hybrids, and a mobile service delivers fat-tire e-bikes to Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Carmel.
The step-up ride is 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach — either self-guided from Pacific Grove or on the daily 2.5-hour guided e-bike tour along the coastline. Mornings are often foggy in summer and the afternoon sea breeze builds, so ride early, carry a layer, and save the aquarium for the gray hours.
