Cycling in Vernon
Best season: May–October
Fifty-odd miles from Manhattan, Mountain Creek Bike Park in Vernon is the closest thing New York City riders have to a real downhill mountain. Fifty-two downhill-specific trails drop roughly 1,040 feet off Vernon Peak, and the lift is the unmistakable “Cabriolet” — an open-air, stand-up gondola that hauls you and your bike to the summit. This is the ground that used to be Diablo Freeride Park, and it still rides like it: rocky, rooty, unapologetically technical East Coast terrain that ranges from green flow to experts-only pro lines. It has landed on more than one “best bike parks in North America” list, and it earns the ranking on the rough stuff.
The park’s own rental center is the practical way in. It rents full-suspension bikes built for the terrain — Trek Session downhill rigs, Trek Slash enduros, plus youth and Rocky Mountain options — for $129.99 a day, and every rental includes a complimentary Fox protective kit with a full-face helmet at no extra charge. Lift tickets are a separate purchase, though the Experience Downhill package bundles a rental, two hours of lift access, and a guided lesson if you want a soft landing on your first day.
Lodging clusters at the base: The Appalachian sits slopeside, and the Crystal Springs resort hotels are minutes away — none run a bike program, so plan to rent at the park. The season runs roughly May through October, mostly weekends with midsummer weekdays.
