Cycling in Mystic

Best season: May–October

Mystic is a compact New England seaport built for slow, scenic riding. The everyday ride is River Road, a gentle few miles that follow the Mystic River north from the historic Bascule Bridge, all waterfront views and sightseeing pace rather than mileage. It’s the kind of route where a cruiser or a hybrid beats a road bike, and where stopping for oysters counts as training.

The bigger payoff is Bluff Point State Park & Coastal Reserve in neighboring Groton — 800 acres of undeveloped coastline, the last large stretch of its kind in Connecticut. A flat gravel fire road loops about three and a half miles along the Poquonnock River through coastal forest and salt marsh out to a bluff over Long Island Sound, and it links toward Haley Farm State Park for a roughly ten-mile family-friendly network. It’s the best coastal riding in the state, and it suits e-bikes and kids’ bikes as easily as anything with knobby tires.

Downtown makes the logistics easy. The Steamboat Inn, right on the river at Steamboat Wharf, keeps complimentary around-the-town bikes for guests in season, and The Whaler’s Inn a block away is tied in with Adventure Mystic for on-the-water and on-wheels rentals. If your hotel doesn’t lend bikes, Mystic Bike Rentals will deliver adult and kids’ bikes with helmets and locks straight to your door, and Mystic Bike and Kayak in Noank rents pedal-assist e-bikes and runs a guided sunset ride out to Bluff Point.

Come between May and October: hotel bike fleets are seasonal, and downtown gets busy on summer weekends, so an early-morning roll along the river is the quiet, uncrowded way to see it.
