Nantucket may be America’s most bikeable island: 35+ miles of paved multi-use sidepaths radiate from the cobblestoned town to every corner, and many visitors never bother with a car. The signature rides are the Madaket Road Path west to sunset beaches, the roughly seven-mile Milestone/Sconset path east to the rose-covered cottages of Siasconset, the rolling Polpis Road Path looping back past the Sankaty Head Lighthouse turnoff, and the short Surfside path south to the island’s most popular beach.
Terrain is flat to gently rolling, so the network suits families and casual riders, while fitter cyclists can link Madaket, Polpis, and Sconset into a satisfying 30-mile island circuit. Ferries land in the middle of town, and three rental shops sit within steps of the wharves — two of them (Young’s, est. 1931, and Cook’s, since 1933) are among the oldest bike shops in the country, and most will deliver to your inn.
Free hotel bikes are a Nantucket signature: The Wauwinet and White Elephant Village stock complimentary Priority cruisers for guests, and the Veranda House offers first-come beach cruisers. Basing at a hotel with a bike fleet effectively erases the island’s steep car-rental and taxi costs.
Practical tip: the season runs roughly late April through October and July–August paths get busy — ride to Sconset before 10 AM for empty tailwinds, and remember downtown sidewalk riding is banned; walk your bike on the cobblestones of Main Street.
