Cycling in Napa Valley

Best season: March–May, September–November

Napa Valley may be the easiest wine region in America to explore by bike. The spine is the Napa Valley Vine Trail, a flat, paved, car-free path being built out to 47 miles from Vallejo to Calistoga; the signature completed stretch links Downtown Napa to Yountville through the vineyards, with rental shops sitting about nine miles apart at either end.

This is cruiser-and-e-bike country, not a training ground: most visitors pedal a relaxed 10–20 miles between tasting rooms, and pedal-assist flattens the valley’s few rises. Confident road riders can add the quieter Silverado Trail side of the valley for a classic wine-country loop.

Hotels lean into it. One Napa hotel on the Vine Trail advertises free e-bike delivery for guests, a Carneros-district resort lends complimentary bikes for rolling between nearby wineries, and downtown Napa’s main rental shop sits two blocks off the trail with cruisers, e-bikes, and kids’ bikes. Up-valley, St. Helena has a long-running cyclery for hybrids and road bikes.

Spring (mustard bloom) and harvest season in September–October are the sweet spots; summer afternoons run hot, so ride mornings and taste later. If you’re mixing wine and miles, book a guided e-bike winery tour — the van support carries your bottles home.
