Cycling in Newport

Best season: May–October

Newport’s signature ride is Ocean Drive — locals call it the Ten Mile Drive — a winding coastal loop that starts near Bellevue Avenue and strings together Fort Adams State Park, Castle Hill, Brenton Point, and a parade of Gilded Age mansions. It’s a shared road rather than a separated path, but the pace is sightseeing-slow and the payoff is nonstop Atlantic views. One important caveat: the famous Cliff Walk is pedestrian-only, so plan to ride Bellevue and Ocean Drive, then walk the cliffs separately.

The terrain is rolling rather than flat, which is why e-bikes have taken over here. Ten Speed Spokes downtown rents hybrids from about $50 a day and e-bikes from $85, first-come first-served, while Island Adventures on Waites Wharf adds townies, kids’ bikes, trailers, and delivery to your door — plus a two-hour guided Ocean Drive e-bike tour if you’d rather have a local narrate the mansions.

Newport also has genuinely bike-forward hotels. The Chanler at Cliff Walk lends guests complimentary Tokyobikes and Bluejay e-bikes with helmets, locks, and picnic baskets; Newport Harbor Island Resort on Goat Island puts free cruisers out for guests from Memorial Day through Columbus Day; and Wayfinder Newport keeps seasonal house bikes with an easy route into downtown.

Come between May and October — the hotel bike fleets are seasonal, summer brings ocean headwinds on the exposed southern shore, and shoulder-season weekdays give you Ocean Drive nearly to yourself.
