Cycling in Ocean City

Best season: April–October (all-day boardwalk riding in the shoulder seasons)

Ocean City’s riding is pure beach-town Americana, and it starts on the oceanfront boardwalk. From the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day the town allows bikes on the boards only from 2:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. — which is why the rental stands open at dawn. The move is a 6 a.m. cruiser, surrey, or banana-bike lap with the sunrise crowd before the pedestrian crush arrives; from the Tuesday after Labor Day until the Friday before Memorial Day you can ride the boardwalk any time. One rule to know: Class 2 and 3 e-bikes are banned from the boardwalk entirely (Class 1 is fine during bike hours).

The rentals could not be closer to the pillow. Dandy Don’s has operated under the Howard Johnson Oceanfront Plaza at 12th Street since 1996 — guests ride down the elevator and onto a Boardwalk Car — while Bike World covers five locations from Caroline Street to 26th, and the Eden Roc Motel runs its own stand and reportedly folds a free rental hour into every stay.

The area’s marquee ride leaves town: about nine miles south via Route 611, a 3.5-mile paved bike route crosses onto Assateague Island, where a further four miles of park path wind among the wild ponies. Assateague Outfitters rents from stands at the visitor center and inside the national seashore, helmets included, so you can drive to the bridge and pedal from there.

Summer means early starts and afternoon beach time; April–May and September–October give you empty boards, open riding hours, and shoulder-season rates — most stands run weather-permitting from about 50°F.
