Cycling in Ohiopyle

Best season: April–October

Ohiopyle is a tiny borough wrapped inside Ohiopyle State Park, and it sits at roughly the halfway point of the Great Allegheny Passage — the 150-mile crushed-limestone rail trail running from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland. The classic day rides start right at the old train-station trailhead: 11 gentle miles up the Youghiogheny River to Confluence, or 17 miles the other way to Connellsville across the historic High Bridge.

You don’t need to bring a bike. Two of the town’s lodgings are run by the same outfitters who rent them — Ohiopyle Suites shares an address with White Water Adventurers’ rental counter, and Wilderness Voyageurs pairs its Trillium Lodge with the biggest rental fleet in town, plus GAP shuttles. Add the Trading Post’s Kickstand shop at the trailhead (with 32 flavors of ice cream for the return leg) and there are more rental bikes here than residents.

Railroad grades keep the riding easy for families, while through-riders treat Ohiopyle as the GAP’s best overnight: waterfalls in town, rafting on the Yough, and Fallingwater a short shuttle away. April through October is the season — summer weekends book out, so reserve bikes and rooms ahead, and note that rental e-bikes are restricted to the GAP and the borough itself.
