Cycling in Ojai

Best season: year-round; spring & fall best

Ojai has long been a favorite of Southern California road cyclists, sitting in a citrus-and-oak valley below the Topatopa Mountains about a half-hour inland from Ventura. The backbone of casual riding here is the Ojai Valley Trail, a paved rail-trail built on the old Southern Pacific right-of-way that runs roughly 9 miles from Fox Street in downtown Ojai down to Foster Park on the edge of Ventura. It connects with the Ventura River Trail to form a continuous, mostly gentle 15-plus-mile ride from the mountains to the beach at the Ventura Pier, popular for the easy downhill run to the coast and the pedal back up. Beyond the trail, road riders climb Highway 33 into Los Padres National Forest and spin the quiet country roads and gravel around Lake Casitas.

For a bike base, the walkable downtown puts you close to the trailhead. Casa Ojai Inn and its sister property Su Nido Inn both keep complimentary bicycles for guests, and the resort-scale Ojai Valley Inn offers complimentary Linus town bikes plus paid e-bike rentals and guided rides. To rent, The Mob Shop on West Ojai Avenue is the full-service local bike shop, renting road, gravel, mountain, e-, and town bikes and running guided history tours on the Ojai Valley Trail, while Ojai Electric Bikes rents long-range e-bikes and cruisers steps from a trail on-ramp on the west side of town.

For four days each June, Ojai hosts the Ojai Music Festival, an open-air classical and contemporary music gathering at Libbey Bowl that has run since 1947.
