Cycling in Okoboji
Best season: May–September
The Iowa Great Lakes are Iowa’s classic summer resort — a chain of glacial lakes ringed by the towns of Spirit Lake, Okoboji, Arnolds Park, Wahpeton and Milford. The riding matches the vacation mood: the Iowa Great Lakes Trail is a ~14-mile hard-surface spine inside a network of more than 60 miles of paths, linking beaches, marinas, ice-cream stops and the 1889 Arnolds Park Amusement Park. It’s flat, wide and family-friendly — the kind of place where the bike genuinely replaces the car for a week.
Rentals are easy to find at both ends of the lakes. The Okoboji Cyclist runs shops in Milford and Spirit Lake with e-bikes, hybrids, road bikes and Burley trailers (helmet included), and BOJE-Bikes in Arnolds Park rents e-bikes by the hour or the week with helmets and locks thrown in. On the lodging side, the Vintage Block Inn & Suites in Okoboji keeps complimentary surrey bikes for guests, and booking sites report free guest bikes at the Okoboji Inn & Suites in Milford — confirm the latter by phone when you book.
Peak season is June through August, when the amusement park and beach scene are in full swing; May and September offer the same trails with far less traffic. Most rental operations are seasonal and appointment-based rentals fill up on holiday weekends, so reserve ahead in July.
