Cycling in Omaha
Best season: April–October
Omaha’s best riding starts at the Missouri River. Paved paths line both banks of the downtown riverfront, and the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge — a curving footbridge locals just call “Bob” — lets you roll across the state line into Council Bluffs, Iowa mid-ride. Link it with the Veterans Memorial Bridge to the south and you get the classic 14-mile two-bridges loop that local guides run as an e-bike tour, passing Union Station and skirting the Henry Doorly Zoo. Away from the river, the Keystone and Papio trails stitch the metro together for longer, flatter miles.
Getting a bike here is unusually easy. Heartland Bike Share blankets the Omaha–Council Bluffs metro with 400 pedal-assist e-bikes at 80 stations, running around the clock all year — handy for one-way riverfront rides. Downtown, River City e-Bike Adventures rents Pedego e-bikes by the hour from Farnam Street a few blocks off the river (riders must be 19+), and mountain bikers can line up an e-MTB through Pedal Omaha.
Several hotels put you on two wheels for free. The Kimpton Cottonwood in the Blackstone District advertises complimentary guest bikes, and aggregators report free loaners at Hotel Indigo downtown and Element Omaha at Midtown Crossing — call ahead to confirm fleets and hours, since house bikes are usually first-come, first-served.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots; Nebraska summers turn the exposed riverfront hot, so ride early and carry water. If you cross to the Iowa side, the short, punchy climb to the Lewis & Clark Monument overlook in the Loess Hills buys the best skyline view of the city.
