Cycling in Outer Banks

Best season: April–June, September–October

The northern Outer Banks is easy riding by design. There is barely a hill between Kitty Hawk and Duck, and the villages are stitched together by a patchwork of paved multi-use paths and bike lanes — the Beach Road (NC-12) paths through Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills, and the well-loved town of Duck shared-use path to the north. This is cruiser territory: sun, salt air, and a coastal breeze that turns every out-and-back into a tailwind one way and a workout the other.

The landmarks make natural turnaround points. Pedal to Jockey’s Ridge State Park, the tallest natural sand dune on the East Coast, or roll north to the Wright Brothers National Memorial — both are gentle rides from Nags Head lodging. Families and casual riders are the target audience here, not sport cyclists.

Several places put a bike under you without a trip to a shop. The historic First Colony Inn in Nags Head keeps complimentary guest bikes (and free beach chairs), and The Sanderling Resort up in Duck lends bikes from the front desk. When you need more — kids’ bikes, trailers, e-bikes, or a full week’s worth — Ocean Atlantic Rentals, Outer Banks Bicycle, and Island Cycles all rent cruisers and deliver along the islands.

Ride spring through fall. Summer is hot, humid, and crowded, though the ocean breeze takes the edge off; there’s little shade on the beach roads, so carry water and sun protection, and check the wind before you plan a long one-way route.
