Cycling in Packwood

Packwood is a pure self-supported gravel base. Sitting on US-12 along the White Pass Scenic Byway between Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens, it opens straight onto the Gifford Pinchot National Forest’s enormous network of forest-service roads — climbs and ridge traverses on maintained and rougher gravel, with popular objectives like the well-graded NF-68 (“luxury gravel”) and long, remote days deep in the national forest. This is high, forested backcountry riding: carry your own supplies, water plan, and repair kit, and check the Forest Service’s Motor Vehicle Use Map for current road and seasonal closures before heading out.

Lodging is straightforward. The Crest Trail Lodge and the Cowlitz River Lodge are the two main US-12 motels in the heart of Packwood — comfortable, budget-friendly bases with parking, positioned as outdoor-recreation gateways with hiking and biking out the door. Neither offers a bike program.

Be plainly honest: Packwood has essentially zero bike services. There is no bike shop, no rental outfitter, and no bike-share in town — the nearest bike shops are well over an hour away toward Chehalis or the I-5 corridor. Come fully self-supported with your own gravel bike, spares, and everything you need for a day in the national forest. That is the trade-off for one of the best undeveloped forest-gravel road bases in the Cascades.

Twice a year, over Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, tiny Packwood fills with the Packwood Flea Market, a sprawling outdoor market that draws big crowds to this White Pass gateway near Mount Rainier.
