Cycling in Phoenix
Best season: November–April (winter road riding; summers are dangerously hot)
Phoenix is a sprawling Sonoran Desert metro rather than a compact cycling town, but its dry, warm winters make it a genuine cold-season road-riding destination. The metro’s marquee bike event is the Valley of the Sun Stage Race, a three-day early-season stage race in February (a time trial, road race, and criterium spread across the Valley, anchoring the USA Cycling Junior Road National Series). Day-to-day riding centers on South Mountain Park and Preserve — over 17,000 acres and the largest municipal park in the country, with a paved summit road and 50-plus miles of desert trails — plus a large network of flat, paved canal paths that thread the metro past parks and neighborhoods. Riding is best from about November through April; summer heat is extreme and dangerous for daytime riding.
Because it’s a big metro, the useful cyclist bases are hotels near the riding rather than a single race hotel. The Arizona Biltmore in the Biltmore district rents Murf e-bikes and runs guided rides up the Arizona Canal to the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, while the Arizona Grand Resort sits right at the foot of South Mountain (I-10 and Baseline) with the Cactus Adventures rental concession on property. For rentals, Cactus Adventures rents mountain, e-mountain, and gravel bikes at the Arizona Grand next to South Mountain’s trails, and Livelo delivers high-performance Trek and Specialized road bikes to your hotel concierge, set up to your fit — the best option for road riders.
Guided options are easy to book: local operators run desert e-bike tours through the Sonoran Preserve and small-group history rides through downtown Phoenix, Roosevelt Row, and Heritage Square, and Cactus Adventures leads guided mountain-bike tours in South Mountain.
From early October into November, Phoenix throws the Arizona State Fair at the downtown fairgrounds, a century-plus tradition of rides, concerts, and fair food — a cooler-season draw once the desert riding gets comfortable again.
