Cycling in Pittsburgh

Best season: April–October

Pittsburgh is where the Great Allegheny Passage begins: mile 0 of the 150-mile crushed-limestone rail trail sits at the fountain in Point State Park, and from there the GAP runs to Cumberland, Maryland, where it meets the C&O Canal Towpath for roughly 335 car-free miles to Washington, DC. Whether you’re rolling out on a week-long tour or just want to say you touched the start, the Point is the ride’s ceremonial front door.

You don’t need panniers to enjoy the city riding. The Three Rivers Heritage Trail laces the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio riverfronts together with bridge crossings between the North Shore, downtown, and the South Side, and the Eliza Furnace “Jail” Trail carries riders from downtown toward the GAP — straight past Golden Triangle Bike, the outfitter at 600 First Ave that rents hourly and daily bikes and outfits full multi-day GAP trips with gear and shuttles.

Hotels here genuinely cater to riders. The Kimpton Hotel Monaco downtown lends complimentary cruiser bikes to guests, while Traveler’s Rest Hotel on the South Side was built for cyclists at GAP mile 145.2 — loaner bikes with a release form, a secure bike garage, and rental delivery arranged straight to the hotel. POGOH, the city’s e-assist bike share, fills the gaps with 50+ stations and a $16 day pass.

City trails are paved and rideable most of the year, but April through October is the comfortable window. If you’re starting a GAP through-ride, book shuttle and outfitting services ahead — summer and fall departures fill early.
