Cycling in Placerville
Best season: April–June and September–October
Placerville sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills and rides like it: rolling paved and gravel backroads climb between the vineyards of the El Dorado AVA and the orchards of Apple Hill, and the roughly 35-mile El Dorado Trail runs west along the old rail corridor toward Folsom. It is largely self-guided country — link the trail to foothill roads and you can string together wineries like Boeger, Madroña, and Lava Cap, all near the South Fork American River. Spring and fall are best; foothill summers get hot and winter is the wet season, though fall doubles as Apple Hill harvest.
Be honest about the trade-off here: this is a strong riding base with thin dedicated bike infrastructure. The historic Cary House Hotel (1857) sits right on Main Street in downtown Placerville, walkable to the El Dorado Trail trailhead, and Eden Vale Inn is an upscale B&B a few minutes out toward the wine country — but neither runs a verified on-property bike program today. Eden Vale has advertised a two-for-one El Dorado Trail biking package, but its partner shop (Placerville Bike Shop) has closed, so confirm the package still exists before counting on it.
Rentals in Placerville proper are effectively gone since Placerville Bike Shop closed. The nearest reliable option is Sam’s Town Cyclery in Cameron Park, about 10–15 minutes west along the trail corridor, which operates as a rental and demo center for road, mountain, e-, and fat bikes; call ahead for rates and waiver terms, which aren’t posted online. Folsom shops at the far end of the El Dorado Trail are the fallback. No dedicated guided bike tours of El Dorado wine country were found — plan on self-guided riding.
The El Dorado County Fair lands over Father’s Day weekend in June with livestock, exhibits, carnival rides, and concerts — a Gold Country tradition that pairs well with the Sierra foothill routes climbing out of town.

Bike-friendly hotels

Historic Cary House Hotel
Restored 1857 hotel directly on Main Street in downtown Placerville, walkable to the El Dorado Trail trailhead — a well-placed cyclist base rather than a bike-equipped hotel. No bike loaners, rentals, or storage advertised on the hotel's own site; confirm bike storage by phone.
Before you book: The hotel's own site makes no mention of bikes; a Visit El Dorado tourism page associates it with generic area 'hiking, biking.' Confirm any bike storage directly with the hotel.

Eden Vale Inn
Upscale B&B a few minutes from downtown and the El Dorado Trail. Its blog has advertised a 'Two-for-One El Dorado Trail Biking Package' (two rentals, trail map, shop pick-up/return) via a local partner shop — but that partner has since closed, so treat the package as likely defunct until reconfirmed.
Before you book: The biking package is described on the inn's own blog, but the named partner (Placerville Bike Shop) appears closed as of late 2025, so the package may no longer be available. Confirm with the inn before booking for the bikes.

Sam's Town Cyclery
From varies · waiver required
Effectively the only in-county rental option, in Cameron Park about 10–15 minutes west of Placerville along the El Dorado Trail corridor. Operates as a rental and demo center for road, e-, mountain, fat, and BMX bikes, with shuttle rides. Rates and waiver terms are not posted online — call to confirm.
Call ahead: Shop's own square.site describes it as a rental/demo center; prices and waiver policy are not published, the storefront recently relocated to Cameron Park (3460 Robin Lane), and a standard rental waiver is assumed. Confirm address, rates, and waiver by phone.
