Cycling in Port Angeles

Port Angeles sits on the Strait of Juan de Fuca at the foot of the Olympic Mountains, and it functions as the practical staging town for riding the Olympic Peninsula. The Olympic Discovery Trail runs right through the waterfront here, a rail-trail corridor that is paved close to town and turns to gravel on outlying segments; from downtown a rider can roll west toward Ediz Hook or east through Sequim on car-free miles. The trail ultimately links a chain of peninsula communities over more than 130 miles.
The area’s headline climb is Hurricane Ridge, a paved road ascent from town into Olympic National Park that gains serious elevation over roughly 17 miles to an alpine visitor area — a bucket-list effort that is best and most reliably open from June through September. Beyond the pavement, the surrounding Olympic National Forest road network is the backbone of the region’s gravel scene.
That gravel is celebrated by Gravel Unravel, an endurance gravel series run on the national forest road system with short, medium, and long courses plus a non-competitive Gran Fondo division. The 2026 calendar stages events from Quilcene (June 13) and the Wynoochee Lake area near Hoquiam (July 18) rather than from Port Angeles itself, but the town remains the natural lodging and services base for peninsula gravel riders.
For rentals, downtown e-bike outfitters are the most reliable current option; the long-established Sound Bikes & Kayaks operates as a shop but has not confirmed active bike rentals on its own site since pausing them, so cyclists should call before counting on it. Waterfront lodging with trail access rounds out the base.
Port Angeles hosts the free Dungeness Crab Festival each October on the downtown waterfront, three days of fresh-cooked crab, cooking demos, and live music — a tasty finish to a ride out along the Olympic Discovery Trail.
