Cycling in Portland

Best season: May–October

Portland’s signature ride is the Eastern Promenade Trail, a 2.1-mile paved waterfront path that hugs Casco Bay along the eastern edge of the peninsula. It’s flat, wide, and beginner-friendly, with island views the whole way, and at its north end it links through the short Bayside Trail to the 3.5-mile Back Cove loop — string them together for an easy, mostly car-free ride of nine miles or so with the downtown skyline across the water.

Because the terrain is gentle, this is a great town for a casual cruise or a family outing. Portland EnCYCLEpedia sits right on the waterfront at 6 Commercial Street, effectively the trailhead for the Old Port hotels, renting hybrids from $25 for a half day and Trek e-bikes from $55, helmets and locks included. Gorham Bike & Ski on Congress Street covers the full range from city bikes to gravel and fat bikes if you want to venture farther.

Portland is genuinely bike-forward for lodging, too. Canopy by Hilton Portland Waterfront lends guests a complimentary Canopy bike to explore the neighborhood and trails, and the Press Hotel in the Old Port is known for complimentary Trek bikes with helmets and locks through the warm season — confirm the current program when you book, since hotel fleets are seasonal.

For a bigger day, ride south to the Cape Elizabeth lighthouses. Summer Feet Cycling runs a roughly five-hour guided e-bike tour that strings together the Eastern and Western Proms, Back Cove, and the iconic Portland Head Light, Spring Point Ledge, and Bug Light. Come May through October for the best weather and the fullest hotel bike programs.
