Cycling in Put-in-Bay

Best season: May–September

Put-in-Bay, the village on South Bass Island in Lake Erie, is one of the few places in Ohio where a bicycle is genuinely the best way to get around. Cars are scarce — golf carts and single-speed cruisers rule the roads — and the whole island rides like one easy loop: the South Bass Island loop strings together downtown and DeRivera Park, Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial, the state park bluffs and a couple of wineries, all on flat, low-speed lanes.

Getting rolling is effortless. Rental stands with coaster-brake cruisers greet both ferry landings — the Jet Express dock downtown and the Miller Ferry dock at Lime Kiln on the island’s south end — renting by the hour or the day. Even better, the island’s historic B&Bs treat bikes as a house amenity: Ashley’s Island House and The Getaway Inn at Cooper’s Woods both give guests free use of cruisers (tandems included at the Getaway), so you can pedal to dinner and leave the golf-cart fee to someone else.

The island runs on a summer clock: ferries and most businesses operate roughly May through September, and weekends in July can feel like a festival. Come midweek or in early June or September for quiet lanes, and book island rooms well ahead — the bike comes with the bed, but the beds go first.
