Roanoke bills itself as the mountain-bike capital of the East Coast and backs it up with one of the largest municipal parks in the US: Carvins Cove Natural Reserve, which holds roughly 60 miles of trail and helped earn the region an IMBA Silver-level Ride Center designation. Beyond the singletrack, the paved Roanoke River Greenway threads through downtown and connects riders to Mill Mountain, Explore Park, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The city is also a designated Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community.
For a bike-minded stay, the historic Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center (a Curio Collection by Hilton property downtown) gives guests a 10% discount on bike rentals with local shop Cardinal Bicycle and sits within easy reach of the greenway and trail networks. Several downtown properties are close enough to ride from directly.
Rentals center on two shops. Roanoke Mountain Adventures, on the Roanoke River Greenway in Wasena, rents mountain, greenway, all-terrain, and e-bikes and runs BICP-certified guided mountain-bike outings plus paid equipment shuttles to Carvins Cove. Cardinal Bicycle, a long-established shop in Grandin Village, also offers rentals. Spring through fall is the prime window, with April to October offering the best trail and greenway conditions.
Each October, Roanoke fills up for the Anthem GO Outside Festival, a three-day celebration of the outdoors where you can demo bikes, watch adventure films, and join a race alongside the craft-beer tents downtown.
