Cycling in Salida
Best season: May–October (Monarch Crest high country rides best July–September)
Salida sits at about 7,000 feet on the Arkansas River, ringed by the Sawatch Range and 14ers. It is best known as the eastern gateway to the Monarch Crest Trail, a high-alpine IMBA Epic that starts near 11,300 feet on Monarch Pass and descends thousands of feet back toward the valley. Closer to town, the Arkansas Hills / “S Mountain” trail system rises straight out of downtown, and the surrounding county roads and passes offer big road and gravel days.
For cyclists, the most practical downtown base is the Simple Lodge & Hostel, which offers free secure bike storage on a locked patio and is a longtime favorite of bikepackers and Monarch Crest riders. Just west of town, the Amigo Motor Lodge (a restored Airstream and motor-court property) has bike parking and books guided outdoor experiences that include biking through its GuideTime partner.
Downtown shops keep visitors rolling: SubCulture Cyclery rents mountain, cruiser, and e-bikes at the base of the Arkansas Hills trails, and Absolute Bikes Adventures runs a mountain-bike rental and demo fleet alongside guided rides. For the Monarch Crest itself, the High Valley Bike Shuttle carries riders and bikes from Poncha Springs up to Monarch Pass on weekend mornings. Note that the long-running downtown retail shop Absolute Bikes handles sales and service but no longer rents bikes.
Salida’s identity centers on FIBArk, America’s oldest whitewater festival, held each June on the Arkansas River with four days of paddling, live music, and a mountain-bike race worked into the lineup.
