Cycling in San Antonio

Best season: October–April

San Antonio turned its river into a bike highway. The Mission Reach — the southern extension of the famous River Walk — is a paved, car-free trail following the San Antonio River from downtown to Mission Concepción, San José, San Juan, and Espada, the four Spanish missions that together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ride it as a flat out-and-back of 20-odd miles from the Alamo to Mission Espada, stopping at aqueducts, dams, and mission churches along the way; the National Park Service maintains the route specifically for hike-and-bike visits.

The hotel side is unusually good. Hotel Emma at the Pearl lends complimentary cruiser bikes and sits directly on the Museum Reach, the river path’s northern arm — so you can pedal from the Pearl through downtown and onto the missions without touching a road. On the River Walk itself, Canopy by Hilton stocks free Canopy Bikes for guests.

If you’d rather not rely on hotel fleets, San Antonio BCycle’s electric bike share runs 16 stations strung between the Alamo and Mission Espada — built for exactly this ride — and Blue Star Bike Shop at the Southtown arts complex rents townies, road bikes, and e-bikes with helmet and lock included, steps from where the Mission Trail leaves downtown. Guided options range from a three-hour two-mission ride to a seven-hour grand tour of all five World Heritage sites.

Cooler months are the sweet spot: October through April brings mild riding weather, while summer demands dawn starts and plenty of water on the exposed southern stretches.
