Cycling in Sanibel Island
Best season: December–April (dry season; summers are hot with daily storms)
Sanibel is one of the rare American beach towns genuinely designed around the bicycle: more than 25 miles of smooth, wide shared-use paths parallel nearly every road on the island, so families pedal from beach to bakery without ever fighting traffic. The terrain is pancake-flat, and the single-speed cruiser with a front basket is the unofficial island vehicle.
The marquee ride is Wildlife Drive through the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge — about 12 miles round-trip from Tarpon Bay (with an 8-mile shortcut), rolling past mangroves and tidal flats crowded with roseate spoonbills, herons, and the occasional gator. Rent right at the refuge from Tarpon Bay Explorers, where cruisers run just $15–$20 a day and it’s a straight shot onto the drive with no street crossings.
Resorts here treat bikes as a core amenity. Sundial Beach Resort & Spa lends complimentary bikes and helmets to every guest, the historic Island Inn rents adult and kids’ bikes on site (youth helmets free), and Casa Ybel hands out bicycles at the concierge desk. For bigger fleets — e-bikes, tandems, surreys, recumbent trikes — Billy’s Rentals on Periwinkle Way is the island institution, with Finnimore’s Cycle Shop a short pedal away.
Come in the December–April dry season for the best riding and birding; time Wildlife Drive for low tide when the feeding flats are busiest, and carry water — shade is scarce out in the refuge. Note the drive closes to all traffic one day a week, so check the refuge schedule before you plan the ride.
