Santa Cruz offers two very different rides from one basecamp. Along the coast, the paved path on West Cliff Drive rolls past surf breaks from the wharf toward Natural Bridges, ideal for cruisers. Inland, the redwood-covered Santa Cruz Mountains hold serious singletrack at Wilder Ranch, Nisene Marks and beyond — this is the town that gave its name to a major mountain-bike brand, and demo-quality full-suspension rentals are easy to come by.
On the beachfront, the Dream Inn on West Cliff Drive lends complimentary beach cruisers to guests on a first-come basis (checked out at the valet desk in two-hour intervals). For rentals, Epicenter Cycling stocks Trek mountain and e-mountain bikes in Santa Cruz and Aptos, and Bicycle Trip on Soquel Avenue rents cruisers, mountain, road and kids’ bikes with helmet, lock and a county bikeways map included.
For guided dirt, Ride the Redwoods runs mountain-bike guiding and skills instruction on the local trail network. Riding is good most of the year; the dry season from late spring through fall gives the best trail conditions. Confirm current rental rates and the Dream Inn’s cruiser terms directly.
Come late June, the Santa Cruz Wharf lines up more than 200 vintage wood-paneled cars for Woodies on the Wharf, a free seaside show that pairs naturally with a spin along the West Cliff Drive path.
